Electrolux Layoffs. Let the Bosses pay for the “Restructuring”

Joint Statement by the Political Bureau of the CC of the Communist Front and the Communist Youth Front's National Secretariat

The Political Bureau of the Communist Front and the National Secretariat of the Communist Youth Front express concern and profound indignation over the announcement made in recent days by the multinational company Electrolux, which presented a plan involving 1,700 layoffs out of 4,500 workers affected in our country, together with the closure of several production sites, including the plant in Cerreto d’Esi, in the province of Ancona.

We are facing a process that has been underway for quite some time and has already seen the company carry out relocations and layoffs, driven not only by the search for cheaper labour power in other countries, but also through the opaque use of several million euros from EU Cohesion Funds for this very purpose. The decision to shut down entire production sites in Italy is being strongly pushed by the financial funds “BlackRock” and “Amf”, which hold 80% of Electrolux shares, in order to defend returns for their investors and increase “competitiveness” on the market in view of a possible acquisition by other major groups, particularly Chinese ones.

We express solidarity with and full support for the permanent mobilization and strike actions promoted by the workers and their trade union organizations, above all FIOM – CGIL. Communists stand alongside the workers at the factory gates, as happened this morning in the province of Ancona, and in the streets. We believe it is necessary to respond firmly to the arrogance of bosses and financial funds that think they can do whatever they want after pocketing billions in profits and receiving nearly 13 million euros in public subsidies over the last ten years. If someone has to pay for this “restructuring”, it certainly must not be the workers, but those who have made enormous profits off the backs and sweat of the working class.

The social disaster we are now facing is a clear representation of the “industrial policy” of the Meloni government: allowing bosses and capital to rule unchecked while defending their interests at the expense of the workers. This is no different from what they already allowed to happen at GKN, ILVA, Magneti Marelli and many others. Once again, the anti-worker character of the policies pursued by a government that serves as the best ally of industrialists and speculators is becoming clear.

The time has come to mobilize not only to defend every single job at Electrolux, but to generalize the struggle by involving all the industrial disputes that have opened in recent years and those that will emerge in the future. We must now recognize that a dangerous capitalist restructuring is underway, affecting entire sectors of production in our country and threatening the destruction of millions of jobs, while progressively converting the productive fabric into a full-fledged war economy. Faced with the prospect of mass layoffs, unemployment and war, it is necessary to unite the workers’ front in order to demand that production and labour be placed under workers’ control, to satisfy the needs of the people rather than the interests of speculators and financial funds. Either our lives, or their profits!
