This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the National Liberation Struggle against Nazi-fascism: the insurrection of hundreds of thousands of men and women, organized in partisan formations, was decisive in the defeat of the fascist regime and its German ally, who had dragged the peoples of all Europe into the nightmare of the Second World War.
Today, it is more crucial than ever to defend the historical memory of the partisan Resistance — which stood for freedom, peace, and social justice — against those who seek to downplay or erase its significance on one hand, and those who try to exploit it by stripping it of its true meaning on the other. This attempt at distortion becomes especially clear in the rhetoric of those who draw a parallel between the Resistance and the push to increase military spending and rearmament in the name of “defending democratic Europe.”
We cannot accept that the values of anti-fascism be twisted at will to serve as propaganda in support of the ReArm Europe Plan, which dangerously accelerates the risk of dragging us once again into scenarios of massacre and destruction — as we are already witnessing with the genocide of the Palestinian people.
That is why today, more than ever, we must proudly raise the banner of the Resistance, and fight against a war economy that is increasingly worsening the conditions of millions of people.
Let us be clear: what workers and the people need is not weapons, but funding for healthcare, education, wages, and social welfare.
Let us build together, during the April 24th torchlight procession in Turin, a united front against rearmament and war, in defense of the true values of anti-fascism!
